Award-winning Canadian fantasy author

With a B.A. in Linguistics and a B.Sc. in Physiology from the University of Saskatchewan, Kate Gateley has always been fascinated by history, Celtic Ideology, ancestral memory and generational wounding, and the “Divine Feminine,” and those personal studies continue to influence every aspect of her life, on the pages of her books and off.

When Kate published her first book, Tides of the Sovereign (FriesenPress 2022), she knew that it was only the beginning of a story she has always wanted to write—one with heart and meaning that was actually worth sharing. Today, with three published books, two Canadian Book Club Award wins, and three shortlist nominations under her belt, Kate celebrates the evolution of this story, which has grown far past what she could ever have imagined… into something that she dearly hopes can one day find a cherished spot among those volumes of both contemporary fantasy and historical romance novels that so inspired her growing up.

Kate writes at her small Cowichan Valley farm on Canada’s beautiful Vancouver Island, where she lives with her amazing husband, two fantastic sons, and a constantly evolving number of canine, feline, and aviary companions. She is a member of The Writers’ Union of Canada (TWUC), Federation of BC Writers (FBCW) and Independent Book Publishers Association (IPBA).

Tides of the Sovereign took the title in the 2022 Canadian Book Club Awards for best fantasy/sci-fi novel, and was a finalist in the 2022 INDIES Book of the Year Awards for best Fantasy novel. Her second book, Mantle of the World Ruler, won the 2023 Canadian Book Club Awards for best fantasy/sci-fi novel, was given an honorary mention for the 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards (Fantasy/Romance), and was a finalist in the 2023 INDIES Book of the Years Awards (Fantasy). When Kate isn’t reading, writing, or wrangling children and animals, she enjoys time in her “hobby library,” which includes any number of creative side quests. Kate prefers not to wear socks, drinks too much coffee, and forever falls for the cinnamon roll hero.
